The
visual upgrade process can be used either with an in-place upgrade or a
database attach upgrade, as previously mentioned. It enables the local
site administrators to define when they would like to start using the
new look and feel for SharePoint sites.
Caution
Visual upgrade is not
available when upgrading My Site. When upgraded, My Site immediately
assume the new SharePoint 2010 visuals.
Previewing the SharePoint 2010 Visuals in a Site
After migration, the
site collection looks and feels exactly like a SharePoint 2007 site,
assuming the option was chosen to keep the existing visuals temporarily
during the upgrade process. Site administrators need simply to click on
Site Settings to see the new visual upgrade option available to them, as
illustrated in Figure 1.
When the visual upgrade action is chosen, administrators are given the dialog box, shown in Figure 2,
which enables them to choose whether they want to keep using the
previous user interface, whether to preview the new interface, or
whether to finalize and update the user interface. Be aware that when
you update the user interface, there is no going back (without a
restore), so be sure to properly test out the visuals and functionality
before committing to the new visuals.
The new SharePoint 2010 visuals will then be shown for the individual site, as shown in Figure 3.
You have the option at that point to click on Site Settings (which has
moved to the left side, per SharePoint 2010 conventions) and commit the
visuals after you are satisfied with the look and feel of the site.
Repeat for any and all
sites within the content database to commit the changes to SharePoint
2010 and make all sites adopt the new look and feel and added
functionality.
Understanding the My Site Automatic Visual Upgrade
Unlike with standard
content databases, when My Site content databases are upgraded, all
visuals for SharePoint 2010 are automatically upgraded, as shown in Figure 4. It is subsequently doubly important to test out the upgrade process in a lab before running the upgrade in production.
