The Roundup Of 120mm Fans: 1,350RPM Speed And More (Part 7)

Scythe Gentle Typhoon High RPM

We are too familiar with Gentle Typhoon products of Scythe. Today, this Japanese company turns up in our review with 3 hi-speed Gentle Typhoon High RPM fans.

Scythe packs its product, in a traditional way, into transparent box with a piece of paper inside.

The packaging

The packaging

This packaging is sturdier than cardboard box and it also allows observing the fan without pulling it out of the box. Technical specs are also listed on the packaging.

The fans come with accessories: 4 screws and 1 fixed cable.

The accessories

The accessories

According to the packaging, like most of other products in this review, they are made in China. Though, Indonesia is actually the country of origin if you look closely to the stickers. Each of the three models costs $23, plus a 2-year warranty.

This hi-speed versions is distinguishable from the ordinary Gentle Typhoons because of having a black frame and a black impeller with additional ring for stiffening.

There is no mere changes here. The blades are long and curved. The frame’s interior is smooth.

The impeller featuring 7 blades is 109mm in diameter while the motor’s diameter is 52mm. The weight is 216g.

The Scythe Gentle Typhoon High RPM series has impressively high speeds. The lower-level models have a rated speed of 3,000RPM yet the medium-level and hi-end models speed as fast as 4,250 and 5,400RPM. The airflow is specified at 83, 116.5 and 150.1CFM. Obviously, noise is not a priority for these fans but Scythe standardizes it at 36.5, 44.0 and 50.5dBA. Unluckily, the static pressure is not claimed. We are curious to know what it is at such high speeds.

The impeller is empowered with a ring attached near the blades’ ends:

It still uses a dual-ball bearing featuring a service life of 100,000h (or over 11 years of continuous usage). The sticker on the motor informs the fan model, power specs and country of origin.

The fans’ motors

The fans’ motors

The power consumption is high. The low-level model needs 2.64W, the medium-level model needs 6.72W and the high-level model needs 13.7W. That’s why the fan is only connected to a PATA power connector. There is a cable specialized for speed regulation. Each cable’s length is 300mm.

SilverStone SST-AP121

The SilverStone SST-AP121 is boxed into a cardboard box with a window in the front:

Technical specs and key features are found on the back.

The accessories are: a PATA connector for 5V or 7V source, screws and silicone pins.

Made in China, the fan costs $15, plus a 2-year warranty.

The SilverStone SST-AP121 is pretty odd. Its impeller has 7 wide translucent blades forming small angles.

The blades stretches out close to the rear grid. The impeller’s diameter is 110mm. The motor’s one is 45mm. the fan weighs 180g.

We can also note such details as the thick ends of the blades, the rounded-off edges and the flat interior of the frame. SilverStone engineers seem to have tried to reduce the noise of the fan as much as possible.

We know how effectively the grid works to focus airflow from the test of our 140mm SilverStone AP141.

The fan specs include: 1,500RPM, 35.4CFM (the air flow is very low in comparison with the other fans at such similar speed), 1.71mm of water and 22.4dBA. It doesn’t support PWM-based regulation. You can only adjust its speed by connecting the fan with a 5V or 7V source via the PATA power adapter included.

The sticker is formative, showing a service life of 50,000h.

Its startup voltage is 5V. At the default 12V, the SilverStone SST-AP121 is assumed to consume about 4W of power. The cable’slength is around 0.5m.

SilverStone SST-AP121-L

SilverStone’s second model, SST-AP121-L, is a copy of the previous product yet it features a lighting system meanwhile the packaging and accessories are the same:

The packaging

The fan owns a silver-plated frame and an air-focusing grid. Its impeller looks translucent.

Its specs are the same as those of the SilverStone SST-AP121, consisting of power consumption, though the lighting system may affect the latter parameters.
