Nvidia GeForce GTX 780 3 GB - A Large Increase Occurring In Every Aspect (Part 2)

9/7/2013 5:19:20 PM

On the front side of the PCB, under heating pads, there are 12 FCBGA chipsets of GDDR5 memory with a total capacity of 3 gigabytes. Samsung's semiconductor chip is marked K4G20325FD-FC03

In 3D mode, the GeForce GTX 780 has memory frequency of 6008 MHz. Doubles with 384-bit bus, this gives maximum bandwidth of 288.4GB/s, as the Titan.

The cooling system is also a copy of Titan's. It has a vapor chamber in its base, an aluminum radiator, a metal frame and a radial fan with optimum rotational speed.

The GeForce GTX 780 has a fan compatible with the adjustment of the algorithm, so the fan changes its speed smoothly under 3D loads.

To check the temperature of the card we used 5 runs of Alien vs Predator (2010) benchmark at the highest quality images, at a resolution of 2560x1440 pixels, and with 16x anisotropic filtering and MSAA 4x.

We used the MSI Afterburn 3.0.0 beta 10 and GPU-Z 0.7.1 for monitoring the temperature inside a closed system case, with the configuration will be discussed in detail in following chapters of review. All tests were conducted at room temperature of 25°C.

With the cooling fan is adjusted automatically, the GPU quickly heats up to a temperature of 82°C and maintains at that level during the test session. The fans rose to 2350 RPM to avoid an increase in temperature.

Automatic and maximum fan speed mode

Automatic and maximum fan speed mode

When radial fan rotates at max 4,270 RPM; the GPU only heats at 57°C. We can also note that the highest GPU clock rate is 1,006 instead of 902 MHz during our testing session (power source and the target temperature is set at the maximum level). That's GPU Boost 2.0 for you.

The noise level of the cooling device was measured between 1:00 and 3:00 PM in a big closed room about 20 m2 by using CENTER-321 electronic noise meter. The noise level of each cooler was tested outside the system case when the only noise sources in the lab were the cooler and its fan. The noise meter was mounted on a tripod and 150mm away from the fan impeller. The examined cooling system was placed at the edge of the table on a sheet of polyurethane foam. The lowest noise parameter that our noise meter can read is 29.8 dBA and the subjectively comfortable noise level in these testing conditions was around 36 dBA (do not mix it up with low noise level). The rotational speed of the impellers was adjusted in entire supported range of in-house controller by changing the voltage with 0.5 V increment.

The noise level of the Nvidia GeForce GTX 780 is compared in the following chart with the AMD Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition.

In fact, Nvidia was quiet in the entire speed range. Even at the maximum speed of the impeller, the GeForce GTX 780 wasn't as noisy as Radeon 7970 GHz Editon. On the other hand, the new card can't be called quiet for 3D applications, for 3-5 minutes in the benchmark or 3D games, the sound of the GTX 780's cooler will rise above the noise of the computer. At 2350 RPM as we saw above in the noise level test was too high for the card to be called comfortable. Only in 2D mode, the new GeForce GTX 780 was quiet and got lost in the noise of the computer. Hopefully the original GeForce GTX 780 with a replacement cooler that was recently announced will be both cool and quiet.

Overclocking capability

We tested the overclocking capability of our GeForce GTX 780 using EVGA Precision X version 4.2.0. Power and the temperature goal are set at the maximum level.

The overclocking settings

The overclocking settings

For the temperature not to interfere with our overclocking experiments, we set the fan at 75% speed, which was about 3200 RPM. With a cooler like this, the GPU's temperature was no higher than 71°C, even at a very high level of noise.

Finally, we try to increase the frequency of the graphics card to 1,018/1,057/7,168 MHz.

The overclocked GPU will run at 1150 MHz in our test session.

We predict that the results are quite good, though not a record-breaking, the results of GeForce GTX 780 didn't have any change.

Power Consumption

We've measured the power consumption of our test, which is equipped with multiple graphics cards use the multifunction Zalman ZM-MFC3 which can record the power that a PC (no monitor ) drawled out from a wall outlet. There are two prototypes: 2D (edit text in Microsoft Word or surf the web) and 3D. In the latter case, loads were generated by four plays running in the "Swamp" demo scene of Crysis 3 at 2,560x1,440 with maximum visual settings but there is no MSAA.

Power consumption of the GeForce GTX 780's configuration is compared with the configuration includes an ASUS GeForce GTX 680 DirectCU II TOP (at GTX 680's standard clock rate) and a reference NVIDIA GeForce GTX Titan model.

 Power Consumption graph

Power Consumption graph

The GeForce GTX 780 needs more power than its predecessor, its configuration consumes 74 watts more than the GTX 680's configuration. When GTX 780 was overclocked, its configuration can almost be comparable to the GeForce GTX Titan in terms of power consumption. The difference between the Radeon HD GHz Edition is not large, only 18 watts under maximum load.
