Performance

Tested with different hardware configurations equipped with standard voltage processor from Intel Core i5-3230M (1.8 GHz, 3 MB L3 cache, 35W TPD), discrete graphics NVIDIA GeForce GT 635M graphics with memory (VRAM ) 2GB, 4GB RAM DDR3 1.600MHz bus with hard drive (HDD) 500 GB SATA 3 Gb/sec.

The results below showed the overall performance of the new Lenovo IdeaPad model is quite good, the powerful midrange GeForce GT 635M Z400 graphics helps meet the learning, working and entertaining gaming needs, and of course, remains in a certain extent because of the limitations of mobile graphics chips.

Results in Heaven Benchmark 3.0, 720p HD resolution, average graphics settings

In 3DMark 11 with Performance test configurations, the Z400 reached 954 points in Graphic and 1,071 points for overall performance. With Heaven Benchmark, a graphics test that is similar to 3DMark 11 and emphasizes tessellation technology in DirectX 11 graphics library, the test configuration attained 21.4 frames/sec and 540 points in 720p HD resolution, which set average graphics.

A "heavy" game test for laptop graphics

With the heavy game Alien vs. Predator (DirectX 11), the 1.366x768 pixel resolution (WXGA) with the lowest graphics settings (low quality, and 0xAF 0xAA), the Z400’s frame processing speed in the game is respectively 30.7 fps (frames/sec) and decreased to 25.8 fps when pushing the settings to the average graphics (medium quality, 0xAA and 4xAF).

The speed of data access

The tradition of a hard drive (HDD) partially affects the overall system performance. Specifically the ATTO Disk Benchmark test showed the highest speed of data access of the system partition is 90.1 MB/s (write) and 107.1 MB/s (read) or to measure the speed with PCMark 05 application (through the simulator) is only at 5.5 MB/second, scanning virus at 119.2 MB/sec. Time to complete the Windows 8 boot process takes about 12 seconds from pressing the power button until entering the Modern UI interface when enabling the "Turn on fast boot".

In a test to check the speed of copying data with 5 GB data sample of 720p videos via USB 3.0, wma. format music and sources, the Z400 only took about 62 seconds to complete the copy of 5 GB of data from the memory pen 3.0 to the Documents folder and conversely, it took 93 seconds to copy from the Documents folder to the memory pen.

Battery

The MobileMark 2007 is one of the top criteria used to evaluate the laptop battery life.

The MobileMark 2007 is one of the top criteria used to evaluate the laptop battery life.

Regarding battery life recognized by MobileMark 2007, the device’s configurations at High Performance mode and screen brightness at 40% (same as switching to battery mode), the Z400 lasted 6 hours 57 minutes 4 hours 46 minutes in the Productivity test.

Similar when playing movies and photos, as well as in the High Performance mode and maximum screen brightness (100%), this ultrabook’s battery life lasted approximately 3 hours of continuous showing, about 35% higher than laptops with 15.6-inch screen in the same test. This is completely normal because the size and screen brightness are factors that significantly affect battery life.

Heat dissipation capability

The temperature was recorded through the HWMonitor and GPU-z utilities, the test environment was at 26 C degrees.

The temperature was recorded through the HWMonitor and GPU-z utilities, the test environment was at 26 C degrees.

Beside the performance tests above, we recorded heat dissipation capability of the device in environments with average temperature at around 26oC degrees. It works smoothly running office applications as well as in the graphics processing tasks or heavy games, but the heatsink is not really effective when the highest temperature of the processor and graphics card in 3DMark 11 test was respectively 73 and 79 C degrees.

Advantages

·         Strong build, high reliability

·         Unique keyboard with soft keys, good bouncing

·         Good overall performance and graphics

·         OneKey Recovery feature helps restoring the system simple and fast

Disadvantages

·         The heatsink does not function very effectively.

Overview

·         It is not only an upgrade with the more powerful specifications, the Z400 also has many fresh colors, which is suitable for dynamic young people to show their personal expression.

·         In addition, the Z400 has a higher mobility due to its 25% slimmer design compared with other IdeaPads from the same series.

·         However, the heatsink is not really effective in graphics tasks or heavy games.
