Become a master chef with this
excellent recipe-packed app
Price: Free
Designed for: Phone or Tablet
Requires Android: 2.3.3 and up
There comes a time, usually at around six
in the evening, when we all have to make an important decision. What should we
have for dinner? That's where Gojee comes into its own. The app is, to all
intents and purposes, a dripping slice of the most illicit food porn you’re
ever likely to see. Glorious high-definition images of all manner of delicious
looking cuts of meat, fresh salads, piled high puddings and other delightful
morsels are coupled with easy-to-follow recipes and some intriguing snippets of
the history behind the meal you’re planning to shove down your gullet. If this
doesn’t inspire you in your mealtime pursuits then nothing will.
Gojee Is an app for food lovers the world
over, and one glance at it is enough to get your mouth watering in
anticipation. There are a few wrinkles, such as the recipes not being
integrated into the app itself, but off instead on the Gojee website, yet
there’s more than enough here to keep the most voracious appetite fully
satisfied for a good while.
Check what you need
The app lists the ingredients you’re going
to need to make your meal of choice before taking you to the recipe, so you can
hit the cupboards and make sure you’re properly stocked up before embarking on
your next culinary journey. You can set up items you don’t like, and the app
won’t show you any recipes that contain them
Sharing platter
Tapping on the Share button lets you tell
the rest of the world what you’re about to cook and eat. You can email the
recipe to your friends, or send it out to your social networks via either
Twitter or Facebook. It’s a great way to let guests know what they’re going to
be enjoying when they come round for tea
Fancy a tipple
Sliding the recipe down lets you navigate
along the top of the screen to bring up a simple menu. From there you can move
to the Drinks section of the app, which offers the same great service, but
focuses on beverages instead of food. It’s perfect if you fancy making
something new and exotic with the ingredients you have to hand
Recipe
Tapping on the Recipe button takes you to
the page on the Gojee site that contains all the detail you need for making
mouth-watering delights. More than that though, you’ll find out about the
background to your dish, its history and how it’s been changed and refined to
become the culinary marvel you’re about to bring to life
B2 Eye Test
The easy way to self-test your eyes
Price: Free
Designed for: Phone
Requires Android: 2.1 and up
There
are six tests to check the quality of your eyesight
B2 Eye Test is an AM easy-to-use app that
lets you try out a few vision tests and see if there’s anything wrong with your
eyes. Obviously, it’s not a replacement for a visit to the opticians, but it
can act as a primer for deciding if it’s time to take action, or a quick check
to make sure everything is still working as it should between trips.
B2 Eye Test won’t win any awards for app
design, it has the look of a slightly old fashioned Android app, but it
features a number of different tests and trials to check your eyesight, and to
see whether or not you're suffering from colour blindness or one of a variety
of other ailments.
The app walks you through the various parts
of the tests, and some of them have an audio track associated with them that
explains each of the steps as they’re happening on screen, just as would happen
at the opticians.
Obviously we don’t recommend any sort of
self-diagnosis over a trip to an expert, but this is a handy little tool to
have if you’re ever worried that something has gone wrong with your eyes, and
can alert you that it is time for a proper checkup. Conversely you can even
post your scores to social networks like Twitter and Facebook if you really
want to brag to your friends and followers about your immaculate, 20/20 vision.
SkyDrive
Manage your Microsoft cloud from your
Android
Price: Free
Designed for: Phone and Tablet
Requires Android: 2.3 and up
The
photo viewer is as easy to use as the rest of the app
Microsoft’s official SkyDrive app for
Android is an easy way to keep track of the big M’s new cloud storage service.
And while the Metro-style user Interface of the app doesn’t quite fit in with
the overall Android aesthetic, it’s still a useful tool for anyone who has
decided to use SkyDrive as their cloud storage of choice.
There’s nothing overly complex about the
app, but it does have some nice touches that make it a pleasure to use. You can
create new folders with ease, upload items from your phone with a few taps, and
change the way you view your files for ease of access.
The app even includes its own photo viewer,
so you can look at any images shared with you without leaving the app. It’s
smooth, smart, and makes cloud file management look easy, something the
obfuscated Ul of other cloud services fail to do on a regular basis.
This isn’t an app for the power user, but
it is a well-designed and easy to use tool.
Clean * Memory Cleaner
A speedy defragmentation app for your
phone
Price: $2.99
Designed for: Phone and Tablet
Requires Android: 2.2 and up
There are already hundreds of ‘defragging’
tools on the Google Play store that brag about being the best clean-up tool,
and while Clean does the same, it might actually be right. It’s definitely not
the best looking app, with a grainy finish that looks out of place on modern
screens, but thanks to a simple Ul that lets you get straight to business, it’s
actually a really useful tool. If you’re a heavy app user then you’re going to
find that Clean makes a lot more space for you, getting rid of the chunks of data
that some apps leave behind, and rearranging your storage for you. It’s quick
too, with the defrag process only taking a few minutes before your phone or
tablet is good to go. If you think your Android is chugging a bit, give Clean a
try, you might be surprised by the results.
TVCatchup
Watch free live TV on the go
Price: Free
Designed for: Phone and Tablet
Requires Android: 2.2 and up
If you live in the UK, TVCatchup is a
stress-free way to watch live television when you’re on the move. The app gives
you access to more than 50 Freeview channels, and lets you watch them from your
Android device using either a Wi-Fi or mobile data connection. With a decent
wireless connection, the streams are impressively smooth, and while they do
judder a little in areas with less than stellar 3G coverage, they remain
watchable for most of the time. The Ul is relatively uncluttered, although you
do get a pop-up advert every time you click on a new channel and an ad bar at
the bottom of the screen too. The name might be a little misleading, but
TVCatchup is a great way of keeping up to date with your favourite television
shows when you’re away from home. A must for UK telly addicts.
