OneNote MX
Take
notes anywhere
Everyone uses their Windows computer for
surfing the internet and more often than not, that involves planning your
holidays and travels, finding new recipes and any kind of research. OneNote MX
is an app version of the popular office tool, which lets you create huge
notebooks full of ideas and findings from the web. You can copy and paste web
pages in, type notes and then share them between devices. OneNote MX isn'tjust
limited to Windows PCs. It's available on tablets and smartphones too, so you
can have access to that bespoke recipe book, or awesome travel journal wherever
you are in the world. What's more, if your Windows tablet is compatible with a
pen or stylus, as many are, you can write hand-drawn notes as if it was an
old-fashioned pad.
FotoEditor
Edit
and share your photos and memories
This nifty free app enables you to make
quick edits to your photos so that they look their best when posting to social
networking sites. You can add filters and crop out the bits you don't need
before saving your image, ready to be shared and enjoyed.
Tuba.FM
Discover
music you love in Windows 8
Music and entertainment is a huge part of
Windows 8, so this app for discovering new tunes you'll love is essential.
Tuba.FM starts you off with an artist you like, then takes you on a journey of
discovery through similar artists.
iCookbook
Mouth-watering
photography
This recipe app by Bewise is the best we've
yet seen for the Modern-Ul style. Along with over 200,000 recipes, we're also
impressed by its food photography. In fact, we're a bit too impressed with it,
as it keeps making us rather hungry. Time has been taken to make sure it's
useful for following recipes and everything is presented in a nice large font.
National Rail
Never
miss your train home again
This smart app not only lets you find
information about your train home, but also enables you to pin your local
station to the Windows 8 Start screen. It puts an end to laborious searches on
the internet, instead giving you access to the information you need straight
from your Windows 8 screen.
Sky News
Stylish
picture-led layouts
One of the finest news apps available for
the Windows 8 interface, Sky News has gone for a picture-led layout. The top
stories greet you as you enter the app and you can scroll right to see
available videos and categories. UK News, World News, Business, Politics,
Showbiz and Sport are the main ones, though there’s another called Strange for
those quirky stories you might have missed. Clicking into a story shows you the
text in a nice readable font that works well whether you have a touchscreen
device or are just reading on a desktop PC. You can tap or click the right or
left of the screen to switch between stories, so if you’re using a tablet you
can use your thumbs to tap through all the stories in the app. It's a really
nice implementation for Windows 8.
Kindle
Read
the latest titles
You'll already know Amazon's Kindle devices
well, but did you know that the books that you've downloaded can be made
available to read on other devices? This Windows 8 app will sync your Kindle
books and you can start reading again from where you left off and enjoy any
custom reading settings you've set up across devices.
Daily Motion
One-stop-shop
for amazing entertainment
If you think of YouTube and strip out the
annoying homemade videos made by one of the internet's most vile communities,
you have Daily Motion. It's a world of great video entertainment and this app
deserves to take pride of place on your Start screen.
