Nikon Coolpix S5200 is a Wi-Fi integrated camera featuring 16MP CMOS BSI sensor and 6x optical zoom. The device also supports full HD 1080p recording with stereo sound. The model comes in colors: silver-white, black, red, blue and plum. RRP is $273.5.

Features

Nikon Coolpix S5200 has a 16MP CMOS BSI sensor and a 6x optical zoom lens which is a 35mm equivalent of 26-156mm. To stand against vibration, the device is equipped with lens-shift (VR) vibration reduction. At hi-speed continuous shooting mode, you can shoot up to 10fps.

The camera also has Auto mode which automatically adjusts settings, 19 capture modes and 360° /180° panorama.  The device also support smart portrait detection with timings for smile, blink notification and image enhancement.

After shooting, you can re-edit the photo in retouch mode including color option and cross screen. You can also transfer photos from the camera to smartphones or tablets, via Wi-Fi. This feature also lets you use your mobile as a remote control.

Video is recorded at full HD resolution with stereo sound.

Design

Coolpix S5200 owns a metal compact design plus light weight thus it fits most pockets. The 3in screen supports 460k dot resolution and is viewed easily in different lighting condition. The camera has standard buttons for compact: ON/OFF, capture and zoom. In the back, there’s a D-pad with an OK button in the center and buttons: record, shoot, playback and delete.

For S5200, menu system has been renewed and innovated, with neater and user-friendlier interface. When shooting, the screen will show options with preview, allowing you to quickly choose effects for photos. There’re also other effects: pop camera, toy camera and selective color.

To use Wi-Fi, you need to download Wireless Mobile Utility apps into your smartphone or tablet (running iOS or Android). After the download is finished, you can use your mobile device to download photos from the camera to edit and share. You can also use it as a remote control. A preview option pops up on the mobile device, you will be able to adjust zooming level and set time. Other info will appear on screen: shutter speed, aperture, number of shot and battery life…

According CIPA test result, runtime can last for 160 shots, quite short, especially when Wi-Fi app would consume quite lot of power.

We took many shots to test the camera’s responsiveness, from switch on to first photo, shot to shot, focusing speed… We shot many times and took the average to ensure the result was consistent and accurate, for easier comparison with other models.

In continuous shooting H and L modes, image resolution was at 16MP. At continuous shooting H: 120fps, VGA sized image was recorded. Continuous shooting H: 60fps, 1MP sized image was recorded.

Photos have good color reproduction and exposure, portrait photos have decent skin tones when captured with Flash, without red-eye.

Lens performance

Detail level is fairly fine even at lens ends though they seem quite soft in corners. It’s possible to see purple fringes in contrast areas yet the whole view is acceptable. Min focus distance is 5cm, allowing to camera to shot macro well.

ISO noise level

Noise level is low at ISO 100, slightly increases at ISO 200-400. Image starts getting blurred and loose detail at ISO 800. Image quality falls drastically at ISO 1600. ISO 3200 delivers poor quality thus it must be avoided.

White balance performance

Under incandescent light in studio condition, auto white balance mode (AWB) performs well while the Incandescent preset works similarly. Under fluorescent light, AWB mode produces an image with a red tone whereas fluorescent preset results in a nicer picture.

Some other options featuring 6x optical zooms that you may consider: Pentax Optio LS465 ($76), Sony Cybershot W710 ($129), Olympus VG-180 ($137), Canon Powershot A3200 IS ($99), and Panasonic Lumix DMC-FS5 ($156).
