Buying Guide: Gaming PCs For Hardcore Gamers' Dreams (Part 2) - Cyberpower Fang III Rattler, Dino PC Maxosaurus 3570K

10/3/2012 9:15:00 AM

The Fang III Rattler is a huge water-cooled beast of a machine. Housed in an imposing Azza Fusion 3000 system case, it resembles some sort of futuristic body armour.

Concealing the top two 5.25in drive bays is a metal panel featuring the CyberPower logo and a blue-illuminated window through which you can check the cooling fluid level.

Three 120mm fans blow air through a large radiator fitted to the top of the case, chilling the liguid as it flows to the CPU. This Intel Core i5-3570K chip has been overclocked from 3.4GHz to 4.5GHz -the joint-highest overclock here. It performed well in our tests.

Red details adorn the inside of the case, including a rear fan guard and brightly coloured mesh rear backing plates. The sheer size of the case means there’s plenty of room to work inside.

Unigue in this group are its easy-swap drive bays: you can slide the supplied drive trays directly into a backplane, without plugging in cables or even opening the case’s side panel. You can install up to six 3.5in drives and four 2.5in drives in this manner, which is particularly useful when using a fault-tolerant Raid setup.

Rubber-sealed holes let you route cables behind the motherboard, resulting in one of the tidiest-looking interiors we've seen in a while.

CyberPower has selected the cheaper GeForce GTX 670 for its Fang III system. The difference in framerates when compared to the GTX 680 is minimal. Unfortunately, though, the graphics card isn't hooked up to the CyberPower’s water-cooling system.

An Asus P8Z77-V Pro motherboard offers built-in Wi-Fi and enhanced overclocking features; it's a significant improvement over the standard and LX versions found elsewhere.

Verdict: Enthusiasts will love this great-looking PC. The build quality is excellent, and you get a premium motherboard and easy-swap drive bays. Performance is good but, given the water-cooling system, more oomph could be squeezed from the CyberPower's CPU.

Dino PC Maxosaurus 3570K

Dino PC tames its Maxosaurus' Intel Core i5-3570K processor with a large Xigmatek Prime SD1484 cooler. This is fitted with a pair of fans in a push-pull configuration, enabling the chip to be overclocked from its stock 3.4GHz to 4.4GHz. It's not the fastest overclock, but throw in 16GB of DDR3 RAM and the Dino PC can keep up with the best of them: it recorded a very good 213 points in WorldBench 6.

Dino PC Maxosaurus 3570K

Dino PC has plumped for nVidia's cheaper GeForce GTX 670 graphics card rather than the top-end GTX 680. Performance differences between the two are small, and Dino PC has been able to spend more money elsewhere in the Maxosaurus' specification.

The Maxosaurus 3570K is the first PC we've reviewed for some time to include a plug-in soundcard rather than relying on the audio capabilities of the motherboard. The Asus Xonar DGX isn’t an expensive addition (retailing for around $39), but it adds a useful headphone amplifier that's aimed at gamers who want to hear every shell casing hit the ground and know precisely where it lands.

Unlike much of the competition here, you also get a 23.6in Asus VS247H full-HD monitor and a decent keyboard and mouse. These input devices are 'proper' gaming models, with editable function buttons and fast, accurate action.

Corsair's Carbide 300R system case holds everything together. It's designed specifically with gaming computers in mind and incorporates plenty of fan-mounting points, removable dust filters and cable management.

The Dino PC Maxosaurus 3570K is neither as large, nor as feature-rich, as CyberPower's Fang III Rattler, but it offers everything you need for an enjoyable gaming experience.

Verdict: The Dino PC Maxosaurus 3570K is a mid-priced gaming machine, with a well-rounded selection of components enabling a complete system straight out the box. It's well built, very fast and designed from the ground-up for gaming. Dino PC offers a very good price-performance ratio.
