Description: Prince of Persia Classic

Prince of Persia is a classic game that captured the imagination of millions of garners around the globe. The animation at the time was a standout and the gameplay innovative, so a port of this classic 1989 platformer is a welcome sight in the App Store.

This is a faithful port of the original game with identical levels and and the same movements, as well as a new wall kick move added to the repertoire. Each level now has checkpoints, a welcome addition to what is still a difficult game, but the butterfly helper seems a little unnecessary.

Gameplay is comprised of all the familiar swordplay, traps and pressure plates using the touch screen controls; however, these aren’t overly accurate when it comes to using your sword. Generally speaking, the controls work very well, but the lengthy sword battles that come later are frustrating and tiresome.

However, platform ing is great. Precise moves and timing through quick reactions are required at many points, creating a good mix of thoughtful and speedy gameplay. This is important as the idea of the story mode is to complete the game in under an hour.

If you failed to do this in the original it was game over, but here the game will continue if the time lapses. It’ll take some practice but it’s possible to beat the game in under and hour.

Don’t be fooled by the “one hour” goal into thinking there is little content here; it’s actually the opposite. There are three modes included; Time Attack, where you really do only have one hour, Normal and Survival; each with Facebook and Game Center integration.

Visually, Prince of Persia has received a fantastic upgrade and the animation is better than ever. It carries the familiar atmosphere and the new coat of paint has really brought Persia alive, using new lighting to make it a vibrant setting on either iPhone or iPad. The HD graphics on iPad are dazzling.

Prince of Persia Classic is exactly that, a classic port that stays true to the original. It’s still a challenge; the core gameplay is intact and the aesthetic upgrades alone make it a great game to play. Sword play doesn’t quite work out as well, but nonetheless it’s still a joy to play.
