IIYAMa Prolite XB2374HDS-1

8/5/2012 9:02:20 AM

IIYAMA'S XB2374HDS-1 has an IPS panel with a Full HD resolution. It has a fully adjustable stand and a choice of VGA, DVI or HDMI inputs.

The same matt-black plastic is used throughout most of the case, with no flashy design flourishes to distract from the screen. The menu system is stripped down to its bare essentials, and its four buttons below the screen conform to the standard logic of Menu, Back and two arrow keys to navigate.

Description: IIYAMa Prolite XB2374HDS-1

As well as brightness and contrast controls, there's a choice of Eco modes that dim the backlight, plus a set of i-style color presets and ACR, a form of dynamic contrast. The latter is subtle - we didn't notice any dramatic shifts in brightness - but it disables the other controls and didn't seem to add much to image quality.

The presets are generally awful. The Text and Internet presets dim the image too much, while Game, Movie and Sports seem to halve the contrast. You also get color controls in the form of Gamma and Color Temperature.

Color temperature is limited to Warm, Normal, Cool, User and sRGB. On the sRGB setting our calibration software reported a 91 per cent match with the sRGB standard, with poor blue and green results.

Despite these niggles, image quality is generally excellent. In Casino Royale, rich colors and warm flesh tones stood out, with strong contrast in dark scenes, though less than the best IPS panels we've seen.

Colour accuracy, viewing angles and contrast are all vastly superior to the TN panel you’re likely to have in front of you; they’re just not as good as those of some of the XB2374HDS-1’s rivals. Still, with its quoted response time of 5ms, we didn’t notice any ghosting or other movement problems. This is a big improvement over early IPS monitors, which had comparitively slow response times.

The XB2374HDS-1 isn’t particularly good value when compared with ViewSonic’s VX2336S-LED. If you need an HDMI port or adjustable stand, however, then the XB2374HDS-1 is a good choice.
