A monitor with an
iPhone dock? That'll be a sight.
The AOC
e2343Fi received its due attention back in CES for the fact that it comes with
an iPhone dock. It's that prospect, that possibility of letting your iPhone's
3.5-inch display grow tenfold, that makes it so incredibly interesting. With
the final product out, one may say that the e2343Fi may not be the monitor
everyone has been hoping for, but it's still a monitor that does more than any
other would.
Design-wise,
the e2343Fi might’ve looked like most AOC monitors available, with one notable
exception: the stand base is more rounded and it houses the iPhone docking
slot. It's not as thin as AOC's own Razor series, but the e2343Fi is slim and
light enough to be a SpaceSaver.

In front of
the iPhone dock are five buttons, one which turns it on, the rest to manage the
screen's display and volume. The rounded base is wrapped is a soft pad for good
reason: it houses the 10W SRS premium sound speakers. At the back, you'll find
the connectivity ports, which include HDMI, VGA, audio-out and a USB port (no
DVI).
To run
iPhone display mode, you simply dock it in and switch the monitor to the iPhone
output. It doesn't mirror the
iPhone's
display on the screen. Rather, you can access your content gallery on your
iPhone and play them on screen. It's not as robust as it sounds: the monitor
only plays videos, music, YouTube videos and photos on a slideshow. We can't
help but feel slightly disappointed, but on a whole, it works well as a monitor
for quick sharing and presentations.
Display
quality here is generally good. While it's hardly AOC's best, the colors do
come out well and images are sharp and crisp. Viewing angle is decent, and it
manages dark images well enough. Because of the size difference, the iPhone
images come out a little washed and squeezed, but otherwise acceptable. We
ought to note that the speakers here are among the best in-built ones we've
had: it's loud, clear and enveloping.
“The AOC
e2343Fi might not have a truly fantastic implementation of its iPhone docking
capabilities, but it does, in fact, provide one, and one capable of playing
videos, photos and music decently. And they do it over an overall good display
and excellent in-built speakers. That, in itself, is a success.”

While not the slimmest around, the e2343Fi won't be taking up much space at
all.
