Throughout the great age of technology,
some of the most impressive innovations isn't only in the conception, but also
the reduction -- most particularly, the reduction of size.
It's a certain crowd pleaser, filled with
resounding responses like "you made it THAT small?" or "Now it
fits everywhere!". It's a time-tested and true formula, and now it's being
applied to the Toshiba Regza Tablet AT200.
You see, the AT200 is, at the moment, the
thinnest and lightest 10.1-inch Android tablet, and you just need to see it to
know it. Just about 7.7mm thick, the AT200 is also light enough for us to
Frisbee it across the room, but that doesn't mean that it isn't well built. It
feels sturdy, with brushed magnesium alloy fitted over the base. Like a katana
blade, it's meant to be slim, light and tough.
One side of the tablet is lined with the
power button and volume control, while the other features an impressive array
of connectivity ports, which covers USB, HDMI, microSD and 3.5mm audio
connectivity.
The screen displays nicely in 1280 x 800
resolution, and the images are mostly crisp and bright enough, but we find that
it's a tad too reflective and smudgy. The audio does an admirable job, so it's
an overall good multimedia experience here.
Running on a dual-core, 1.2GHz Texas
Instrument processor, the AT200 might not have provided performance chops to
rival a Tegra 3 rig, but it's undeniably decent in both speed and user
experience. It may hitch up occasionally, but the interface runs smoothly
enough and it can handle HD content without problems.
The AT200 comes shipped with Android 3.2
and doesn't switch around much of its user interface. You can upgrade it to Android
4.0 eventually, however. The battery life here is good; it matches much of its
8.5-hours claim, which is sufficient enough for everyday use.
