Windows 7 : Installing Configuration Manager 2007 (part 3) - Configure the Site Server
The setup of Configuration Manager is all done! It was a long process. It might make you wonder about the value of using ConfigMgr for OSD at all. Think of this work as an investment. You need to put in a big investment to get big returns. ConfigMgr is aimed at large organizations.
Windows 7 : Installing Configuration Manager 2007 (part 2) - Install the Site Server
You can install ConfigMgr once the prerequisites are installed and configured. These steps will install Configuration Manager 2007 with Service Pack 2, update the site server to Configuration Manager 2007 R2, and add additional components that assist OSD.
Windows 7 : Installing Configuration Manager 2007 (part 1) - Prepare for a ConfigMgr Installation
A significant amount of work is required before you even start to install ConfigMgr. Prerequisites in the Active Directory forest and domain must be configured, and the server must be prepared.
Windows 7 : Zero Touch Installations - Understanding Configuration Manager
When ConfigMgr deploys a client to a computer, the hardware auditing agent is usually enabled. The agent gathers hardware information about a managed computer. But it also gathers information such as the software installed and the operating system information.
Windows Vista : Programming the Windows Script Host - Programming Objects
Every programmable object has a defining set of characteristics. These characteristics are the object’s properties, and they control the appearance and position of the object.
Windows Vista : Programming the Windows Script Host - Scripts and Script Execution
Scripts are simple text files that you create using Notepad or some other text editor. You can use a word processor such as WordPad to create scripts, but you must make sure that you save these files using the program’s Text Only document type.
OS X Mountain Lion - Bringing iOS features “back to the Mac” (Part 4)
When an iOS device is asleep, it’s still doing stuff – checking your mail, making alert sounds, and even backing up your system. That’s why you can wake up an iPad and get an up-to-date count of messages in your inbox. With Mountain Lion, Apple is introducing a version of this iOS feature to the Mac, called Power Nap.
OS X Mountain Lion - Bringing iOS features “back to the Mac” (Part 3)
Ever since Apple introduced the Mac App Store, people have speculated that eventually the Mac like iOS would run only software sold via the store. I never thought that was a serious possibility; Mountain Lion seems to prove me right.
OS X Mountain Lion - Bringing iOS features “back to the Mac” (Part 2)
With Mountain Lion, Apple continues to make OS X iOS more similar in look feel, and even nomenclature. So OS X’s Address Book app is now Contacts, and iCal is now Calendar. More notably, there are some new Mac apps built specially to match and sync with iOS counterparts.
OS X Mountain Lion - Bringing iOS features “back to the Mac” (Part 1)
Like Lion, Mountain Lion adds numerous features that will be familiar to iOS users. This OS X release continues Apple’s strategy of bringing iOS features “back to the Mac”. Those features include iMessage, Reminders, Notes, Notification Center, Twitter integration, Game Center, and AirPlay Mirroring.
Parallels Desktop 8 for Mac - Making Running Windows A Pleasure
Parallels was the first company to come up with a virtualization platform for the Mac, allowing you to run Windows, Linux and a bunch of rival operating systems without having to buy a PC. Version 8 adds support for Android virtual machines, but with an eye on the typical user we tested it with Windows 8, which is due to ship at the end of October.
Acer Aspire V3-571 - Impressive Performance
The V3-571 model that they sent me for review has 'Intel' running through it like 'Blackpool' goes through rock, using the Intel Core i5-2450M processor and Sandy Bridge HM77 Express chipset. That's a dual core CPU with hyperthreading and its wired to 6GB of DDR3 RAM, exploitable through the preinstalled Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit.
GPU Cooler Quick Test: Arctic Accelero Twin Turbo 690 vs. Thermaltake Water 2.0 Pro
The Water 2.0 Pro is the first Thermaltake liquid-cooler we’ve seen for a while. It features a full-thickness, single radiator sandwiched between two 120mm fans, and a combined pump and water block. At $145.5, though, it’s very expensive compared to the competition; the Corsair H80, for example, costs just $113.

Windows 7 : Protecting Your Network from Hackers and Snoops - Testing, Logging, and Monitoring
If you have installed a web or FTP server, attempt to view any protected pages without using the correct username or password. With FTP, try using the login name anonymous and the password guest. Try to copy files to the FTP site while connected as anonymous—you shouldn’t be able to.
Windows 7 : Protecting Your Network from Hackers and Snoops - Active Defense
Using a firewall is an effective way to secure your network. From the viewpoint of design and maintenance, it is also the most efficient tool because you can focus your efforts on one critical place, the interface between your internal network and the Internet.
Windows Server 2003 : Dynamic DNS
Dynamic DNS is Windows 2000 and Windows Server 2003's way of bringing together the one good feature of WINS—automatic machine registration and record updating—with the resiliency and open standards advantage of DNS, a staple of the Internet.
Windows Server 2003 : Subdomains and Delegation
It's rare to find an organization running its own DNS that is small enough to not take advantage of subdomains and delegation . By delegation, I mean letting one group, whether logical or physical, administer a section of an organization's network.
AMD Radeon HD 7950 3GB vs. Nvidia GeForce GTX 660 Ti 2GB vs. Nvidia GeForce GTX 670 2GB (Part 3)
While the GTX 680 2GB now looks rather overpriced at $611, the GTX 670 2GB manages to hit the high-end performance sweet-spot perfectly, offering much of the performance of the top-end cards at a price that’s 20 – 25 per cent lower.
AMD Radeon HD 7950 3GB vs. Nvidia GeForce GTX 660 Ti 2GB vs. Nvidia GeForce GTX 670 2GB (Part 2)
The GrForce GTX 660 Ti 2GB now finds itself pitted against AMD’s HD 7950 3GB at a price point just north of $353.9. Just like the GTX 670 2GB and GTX 680 2GB, the HTX 660 Ti 2GB is based around Nvidia’s GK104 Kepler GPU, although as you’d expect, it’s received additional cuts to allow it to hit the lower price point.
AMD Radeon HD 7950 3GB vs. Nvidia GeForce GTX 660 Ti 2GB vs. Nvidia GeForce GTX 670 2GB (Part 1)
Like the HD 7970 3GB, the HD 7950 3GB has recently benefitted from healthy price cuts, driver updates and a legitimate overclocked SK in the form of the HD 7950 3GB With Boost since its release. It now has a far more tempting price of $353.9 for stock models, and goes toe to toe with Nvidia’s TX 660 Ti 2GB.
Canon i-Sensys LBP7680Cx - At Your Command
The LBP7680Cx is Canon's first laser printer that's designed to be equally at home in small business and enterprise workgroup environments. Workgroups will appreciate its support for Canon's multifunction embedded application platform (MEAP) for integration into existing printer management systems. MEAP enables the printer to run Java apps, and Canon's focus is clearly its uniFLOW print and scan document management software.
EVGA GeForce GTX 650 1GB - Severely Cut Down From GTX 660 Ti
AMD's line-up of its current gen cards has been more complete than NVidia's for some time now, thanks to cheaper cards like the HD 7770 and 7750. However, with the release of both the GTX 660 and the GTX 650, NVidia is finally beginning to bring Kepler-Based cards to the mainstream.
Top 10 TV Receivers & Recorders – November 2012
Still the best Freeview HD box out there, the Sammy’s slick, dual-core operation, twin tuners and 500GB HDD are enough to keep it ahead of the also-rans, while its superior raft of movie-streaming services are what beast the excellent new Humax T1000 (below)
Corsair AX1200i - A Top-End PSU With Digital Voltage Control
Developments in PSU tech generally happen at a snail’s pace; a tweaked capacitor here, a redesigned coil there, all pushing efficiencies slightly higher and allowing for marginally tighter voltage regulation. However, Corsair’s AX1200i is the first PSU we’ve seen that’s equipped a digital signal processor instead of the typical analogue circuitry to control voltage stability and ripple.
Akasa Venom Power 750W Modular PSU - Well-Priced And Handsome PSU
Akasa has been making power supply units for a long time, but they are rarely mentioned in the same sentence as high-end models from the likes of Seasonic or Corsair. The Venom 750W is a modular PSU from the manufacturer, which features the same striking yellow and black color scheme as the rest of the Venom range.
AMD Radeon HD 7770 1GB vs. nVidia GeForce GTX 650 Ti 1GB
Like much of AMD’s current line-up, the HD 7770 1GB has received a healthy price cut recently, in addition to driver performance updates. Now available for around $144.5 for a stock card, it goes head to head with the GTX650 1GB; a card which, on paper, it comfortably beats.
AMD Radeon HD 7850 2GB vs. Nvidia GeForce GTX 660 2GB vs. AMD Radeon HD 7870 2GB (Part 3)
The HD 7870 2GB is another AMD card that’s greatly benefitted from recent price cuts and driver updates. Launching at around $386, it now finds itself on the wallet-friendly side of $321.5 and competing with Nvidia’s GTX 660 2GB.
AMD Radeon HD 7850 2GB vs. Nvidia GeForce GTX 660 2GB vs. AMD Radeon HD 7870 2GB (Part 2)
The GTX 660 is based on the GK106 Kepler GPU, rather than the GK104. This means a lower transistor count and die size with the increased chip yields also making for a lower price tag. As such, the GTX 660 2GB sits in the very competitive sub-$321.5 market, where Nvidia had so much success with the GTX 560 Ti 1GB.
AMD Radeon HD 7850 2GB vs. Nvidia GeForce GTX 660 2GB vs. AMD Radeon HD 7870 2GB (Part 1)
The HD 7850 2GB finds itself in the ideal position of basically being unopposed by a comparable Nvidia card. The GTX 660 2GB costs $64.5 more, while the newly released HD 650 Ti 1GB is $40 cheaper, leaving this mid-range card offering a great deal of performance for a sub-$241.5 price tag.
AMD Radeon HD 7950 3GB - Decent High-Res Performance
Like the HD 7970 3GB, the HD 7950 3GB has recently benefitted from healthy price cuts, driver updates and a legitimate overclocked SK in the form of the HD 7950 3GB With Boost since its release. It now has a far more tempting price of $353.9 for stock models, and goes toe-to-toe with Nvidia’s TX 660 Ti 2GB.
Asus P8B75-M LX – Entry-Level Motherboard With Almost Everything You Need
Asus has taken full advantage of these features on the MicroATX P8B75-M LX. There are four external USB 2.0 ports on the back plate, two internal USB headers, two USB 3.0 ports at the rear and a USB 3.0 internal header at mid-board. Gigabit Ethernet support is provided by a Realtek 8111F controller and there is support for VGA and DVI monitors out of the box.
Windows 8 Special (Part 5)
Not every program you run will be a new UI app, and there was at first some confusion regarding the installation of normal programs or non-Windows 8 apps. Let’s put this straight: you can download or install from disk any program that you would be able to install if using Windows 7 or XP.
Windows 8 Special (Part 4)
For those lucky enough to enjoy the desktop real-estate of dual monitors, Windows 8 offers improved functionality over previous versions of the operating system, but at the same time, it also does something rather odd.
Windows 8 Special (Part 3)
One problem I have with the new UI is the application switcher, which is accessible by moving the mouse to the top left of the UI screen. It’s such an odd addition to an otherwise well-thought-out UI, because it’s quite awkward to initiate and manipulate the applications under it.
