Mass
Effect 3 was one of the most anticipated games of 2012 and increasingly these
days, no blockbuster game goes without its own blockbuster app. Mass Effect
Infiltrator is the side story accompaniment to Mass Effect 3, deviating from
the main plot and even the RPG elements that make the series so great.
It
seems a risk considering the deep story and the RPG gameplay are the two major
strengths Mass Effect has going for it. But as we know, lOS is not a console so
Infiltrator strives to be a straight shooter surrounded by a simpler story.
It’s not as deep an experience but it’s a very good mobile game.
Infiltrator
is a third-person shooter where you take the role of Randall Ezno as he fights
against Cerberus, an organization determined to protect humanity at all costs.
However, it’s their methods that are highly questionable.
While
most of the RPG elements are removed, Randall is still able to acquire new
weapons, biotics, and other upgrades through in-game credits that can be
accrued through searching safes, computers or at the end of each battle.
The
combat system is a good one and players are rewarded using various methods to
attack enemies while taking as little damage as possible and finishing the
fight within a timeframe. At the end of the fight you receive a ranking and
some shiny stars in three categories: style, time and health. The higher the
ranking the more credits become available to you.
Combat
is also made up by a cover system obviously derived from Mass Effect 3, as
Randall will snap to take cover and you can swipe the screen to roll from point
to point. Enemies within the attack range are indicated with a blue rectangle
around their body and tapping this allows you to begin an attack. By adjusting
the right side of the screen, you can tweak your aim and, once the enemy is
defeated, you can chain attacks together with another enemy by tapping them as
long as they are within range. As you unlock more weapons and biotics, chains
can be put together in impressive styles.
You’ll
find that as you defeat enemies, you’ll be able to collect intel
that has been dropped on the map. This can be used by uploading to the Galaxy
at War servers to assist the Alliance in the fight to free Earth or you can
trade it in for credits to be used in-game with each piece of intel earning you 50 credits. Credits sound good, but it’s
much better, uploaded to the servers to give you a better shot at surviving the
final battle in the parent game, Mass Effect 3.
Infiltrator
is a fantastic looking game, it sounds awesome and the implementation of intel to assist in Mass Effect 3 is genius. It’s a familiar
Mass Effect experience but Infiltrator does a good job of providing something
unique and separate, yet connected, to the blockbuster series. At the same time
it’s a good take on the third-person shooter for iOS and although not as deep
as what hardcore fans have come to expect from the franchise, Infiltrator is
still a highly satisfying title.
