Samsung LED TV ES8000 - The SMART in Smart TV

5/13/2012 11:43:26 AM

No doubt about it: the Samsung ES8000 is the smartest TV there is

We'll just go ahead and say it: the Samsung LED TV ES8000 has taken Smart TVs to a new level, and that level is a lofty one indeed. Packing in almost every feature one can think of, the ES8000 is an ambitious undertaking, and it pays off nicely.

This 55-inch TV starts off by looking great; it's slim and sits on top of a sophisticated U-shape stand. The 0.2-inch slim bezel design makes it look like a floating painting, and it's even VESA wall-mounted if you intend it to be a premium decor. Look to the back and you'll see that it supports most of all the connectivity you need. There's also a section which, eventually, lets you attach a Samsung Evolution Kit to effectively upgrade it, so it's not going to go obsolete for a few years.

The ES8000 offers up a marriage of Motion Control, Voice Control and Face Recognition to interact with the TV's features. Motion Control here is pulled off via motion sensors at the top of the TV, which turns your hand movements into an on-screen cursor. You use gestures like grabs and waving to launch applications or to backtrack. It's an intuitive, surprisingly smooth experience. Voice Control works via simple voice commands, which you activate first with a general command ("Hi, TV!"), calling out another set of commands which you can activate. It works great when it does, but the voice detection and recognition can be rather finicky at times.

The face recognition lets you login to your profile with just your face, and the detection accuracy here is impressive. Not only does it take a second to register your face, it also manages to avoid getting confused by multiple on-screen faces.

Most importantly, though, is the TV's actual cinematic experience, and boy does the ES8000 deliver. Using a edge-lighted panel instead of a back one, the TV manages some super-crisp, sharp and bright images, and even reproduces more realistic depth-of-field. The TV is 3D capable, too, and is able to convert 2D content to 3D.
