MSI GT70 : Turbo-Charged Gaming

7/11/2012 5:56:16 PM

The MSI GT70 blazes a trail for gaming notebooks to come.

Gaming-centric notebooks are a luxury, and they ought to be. Every bit of it should be bleeding quality, every of its insides burning with performance. You're shelling the cash out for the best, and it better well be. For the MSI GT70, consider your cash well shelled.

This 17-incher takes its design cues from previous MSI GT incarnations, particularly the B2 bomber inspired aesthetics. Rugged edges, decked out in obsidian matte and gloss, makes up the GT70's stylish looks. It's undoubtedly bulky and heavy, and there's little done to make it more portable. But with the hardware inside, you can't really expect slimmer.

There's a healthy amount of connectivity ports here. At one side, you get a row of three (l) USB3.0 ports, the multi-card reader, and all the auxiliary ports you need. The Ethernet port, along with the display output one, are situated at the back.

The keyboard here is, hands-down, one of the best there ever is. Designed by SteelSeries, they click gratifyingly and provide some excellent tactile feedback. Even better are the backlighting, which you can customise to even pulse or light differently. The trackpad is perfectly smooth and precise, and the dynaudio speakers a fantastic job of being loud and clear. The 17-inch screen works generally well, and is crisp and sharp.

The downside is its narrow view angle, which only does its best viewed head-on. Of course, you can't expect the insides to skimp out. The GT70's specs is most impressive on two parts: the Ivy Bridge Intel Core ¡7-3610QM processor and the NVIDIA GTX 670M GPU. Combined with the immense 16GB RAM, and with MSI's Turbo Boost feature, the notebook can be pushed to perform wonderfully. Our benchmark scores speaks for itself, and it can run the most demanding games like Battlefield 3 without hitches (at Ultra settings, we managed 30fps -- as good as it gets on a laptop).

“The MSI GT70 is great on the levels that matter: it has quality, excellent components ranging from the great keyboard to the wonderful audio, and it has powerful, performable hardware that makes it a gaming powerhouse. It's expensive, no doubt, but you know you're getting pure gaming bliss.”
